ICAO EN Exam Content

  • General topic conversation
  • Explanation of technical terms
  • Reading abbreviations and numbers using aviation phraseology
  • Message decoding: METAR, TAF or NOTAM
  • Analysis and description of aviation-themed images
  • Listening to ATIS message with subsequent decoding
  • Communication with ATC during simulated flight according to scenario

Assessed Areas

Examiners assess the level in six language areas during the language proficiency check:

  • pronunciation
  • grammar and sentence structure
  • vocabulary
  • fluency
  • comprehension
  • interaction

Each area is rated at level 1 to 6. The lowest score from all language areas is the final result of the entire proficiency check – ICAO English Level.

ICAO EN Exam Levels and Validity

ICAO Level 4 – Operational Level – valid for 4 years (minimum operational level of language proficiency)

ICAO Level 5 – Extended Level – valid for 6 years

ICAO Level 6 – Expert Level – unlimited validity (no expiration)
